Research - Teen Film Openings

Adulthood Opening

Kidulthood Opening

The music and sound used in both of these teen film openings are from the genre of grime. Grime is normally listened to by the youth and is similar to rap but it is like a UK scene. Grime is a mixture of other genres and some grime artists that are well known are like Giggs, Wiley and Skepta.

How to convert Final Cut Pro films

How to convert Final Cut Pro films so that they are compatible for Blogger.

I wasn't allowed to upload the Final Cut Pro version of the Shot by Shot remake onto the blog as the file was too big, therefore I had to convert it via QuickTime Movie and then Handbrake..

Firstly, I was told to click on to file, export and then 'Using QuickTime Conversion' and this little box popped up..

I was the told to save it onto the video drive and then click save

And once that was done and saved onto my video drive I  had to convert it again but this time via Handbrake.

So I opened up the software/app and found the file I wanted to convert

After I found the file I had to click on 'Blogger' so then it would be compatible for me to upload onto our blog

Filming Dates

Planning the pitch for the teen film

Our pitch for the Teen Drama film

With-in our group, we have decided what we have to do as a group and what individual people have to do.

Group - The title of your movie.

Shah - The treatment (brief outline of the whole film, then brief outline of the OPENING to that film)

Samet - What type (sub genre) of Teen Drama is it? Which real film openings have inspired you?

Mehak - Planned locations and location shots (not from the internet - show you have been to the location and taken shots)

Mirkan - Props, costumes ad other miss en scene. (picture of actual items please!)

Group - Full storyboard and animatic including titles - where they will be placed, what they say and the in which they appear.

Group - Ideas about sound from Creative commons and the sound fx folder

Mehak - Production schedule (what you are doing and when) - Use time TimeToast for this

Mirkan - Risk assessment

Group - Skills audit to date (what you have learned about equipment and software and blogging skills too)

Shah - Institutional detail - which film company would produce your movie and how would hat affect PDE

Samet - Audience detail - who is your target audience and what would appeal to them about your film

Problem Occured and How It Was Solved

Problems Occured Whilst Editing the Shot by Shot Remake

Whilst editing the Shot by Shot Remake this was the only problem that occured - Media Offline
Which meant that the file that we had inserted was not on the video drive.
So I had to..

 Click on 'Reconnect Media'

Then 'Locate'

Then this comes up - I hd to go into the folder in which my file was in and click on it and then click 'Choose'
And Finally, it reconnected and the file was there again.

Shot by shot remake - Comparison

Our remake of the film went quite well although we missed out a couple of shots as they were not in our storyboard due to the storyboard being given to us by the teacher because our one had glitches and did not work.

Editing our film took us quite some time because this was the first time our group edited something like this and we were using final cut pro which we haven't used before, it took us time to figure out everything and get used to this software.

Our film is not entirely the same as the original because we had difficulty getting the timing right, also we were not able to get real props and we had to improvise. The voiceover is slightly off time as the original is quicker than our one.

The original is much more quicker and flows well whereas our one is slightly slower and the timings are slightly off, the editing in the original is precise whereas our one is not perfect it can do with a bit of work.

I think if we had a longer time period to do this work we would have done better or if we could do it again we would do it a lot better and make it very similar to the original.

Perfection was hard to meet but overall I think we did well considering it was our first time doing something like this.

Final Remake - The breakfast club (film)

Our Final Remake of The Breakfast Club

Problems Occured Whilst Editing.

These were the problems that occured whilst editing the final remake of the Breakfast Club;

When I opened Final Cut Pro I discovered that the software wasn't able to find the footage I had entered in there and this happened with quite alot of footage. Therefore I had to locate the files
..
Step 1 -

Step 2 -
<--- This came up and I was told to click locate so I could locate the footage.

Step 3 -

Step 4 -
<--- I then searched and selected the footage that wasn't discovered and clicked choose.

Step 5 -
<--- And finally, I clicked connect and all of the footage had come back.

Shot By Shot Remake - Editing

Here are some screenshots of us editing our shot by shot remake of The Breakfast Club.

This screenshot shows Mehak trying to edit the music and putting it in the correct order.

This screenshot shows Samet putting the last scene into place and making sure that the timing is correct.

This last screenshot shows Shah adding the finishing touches to the remake.

Mirkan then compressed the video via handbrake and then uploaded it.

Examples Of Teen Films

Here are a few examples of teen films that I find to be very good, they are all British made and are known my almost all teenagers. The genres of all of these films are quite similar and so are the themes and conventions. They all have to do with gang-life, drugs and crime, a hint of comedy and romance.

Here are just a few images from each film:

Kidulthood

Adulthood

Anuvahood

Holiday Task

My Brother The Devil

The teen film that I have chosen is 'My Brother The Devil'  which is a teen film about two teenage brothers who are linked to the streets of London, as they are part of the gang-life and are also linked with drug dealing and life on the streets. James Floyd plays Rashid, whose hard-working parents came to the UK from Egypt. Growing up on the streets he started to get involved with drug-dealing and gang culture. His brother, Mo who is played by Fady Elsayed takes his footsteps and path. Rashid encounters his sexual feelings and that he is homosexual, which is not accepted by his friends and family. This later on leads to his friends betraying him and wanting to kill him and his family.

The are many different conventions that are portrayed in this film which add up to categorise the film to be a teen film. There are a number of themes that are explored in this film and some of them are violence, romance, drugs, crime, sexuallity, teenage life and any more.

The Genres of this film would most likely be crime, thriller, romance, hints of comedy and drugs. There are other examples of this film that have the same genres such as Kidulthood, Adulthood and Anuvahood.

Overall this film is an excellent example of a teen film that is British, and the teens of Britain can relate to this film and they would also agree that this film by far is one of the best teen films that have been released recently.

The Rule Of Thirds

Rule of third is a concept in film production in which the frame is divided into nine imaginary sections - this creates reference points which act as guides for framing the shot.

The important elements of the shot should be placed 1/3 or 2/3 of the way up or across the frame rather than in the centre as off centre subjects can give more of a sense of direction.

Shot By Shot Remake Planning

The storyboard hasn't come out properly due to a problem with the programme, it kept pin glitching and did not allow us to do what we needed to do, these images are what we have left and we cannot do anything about it.

Timetoast Of Juno - Explanation Of Order Of Titles

The order of titles are very important because the first names to come up are the companies/characters that get payed the most. The company that put's in the most money to invest in the film are usually the first title to come up in the sequence and it is written very clearly big and bold. As you go along the sequence the it goes from largest amount of money invested to smallest amount of money invested. Whereas characters come after the companies and the characters that gets payed the most is first and the order goes from payed the most to payed the least. Special guests usually come right before the Director, the director is always last just before the film starts.

Individual Work - Genre and Sub Genre

A teen genre film is targeted at a teenage audience or young adults. Normally, the plot will follow a everyday life of a teenager or the plot might follow something that will interest young adults and teenagers. The teenage films are normally aimed at teenagers who are in the age bracket of 13-19, but people above 19 can also watch the movie. Its mainly for teenagers between 13-19 because it strongly relates to them and things that they might go through or have gone through will be portrayed within the film.

Sub-Genres:
The main sub-genres of teen movies are: Love, comedy, sci-fi, romantic comedy, love story, fantasy, horror, romantic comedy, teen drama. E.g: American Pie has the sub genres: Love, Romantic Comedy, Teen Drama, and Love.

Individual Task - Weird Science

The trailer above is for the film 'Wierd Science' which is classed as a teen movie. A short overview of the film is, that 2 geeks get the idea that they want to create the perfect girl, after watching a science programme. When the two boys create the dream girl, their lives change for the best because they started getting the respect all the cool kids were getting. The plot is very funny and interesting in the film because they go through a lot of things. Overall, this movie is typical 'teen movie' because it involves high school students and ranging from a number of different characters e.g. there's a bully, there are 2 geeks and attractive girls.

Individual Blog: Weird Science

The film Weird Science could be classified as a teen movie as well, as it contains the typical stereotypes in a teen movie such as: Women being 'sex objects', Nerds/Geeks, Popular Rich Guys, also themes such as sibling rivalry, bullying, love and competition.

The film is about two teenagers Wyatt and Garry which in school is stereotyped as 'Geeks' and are bullied as being the teachers pet, so they are unable to be with the two popular girls in school. So these two teenagers over-exaggerate their imagination and create their own 'Dream Ideal Women' with their knowledge of science. They name their dream ideal women as Lisa. Lisa tends to sort out all of Garry and Wyatt's problems with superpowers and eventually makes the two nerds into the most popular and rated people in the film and their lives change completely.

Weird science is filled with Comedy, fantasy, romance and action, which is a typical teen movie as it has the correct setting; a high school, house parties and etc. The film is targeted at both genders as it favors both sides.
